Island Hopping Evangelism and Church Planting in South Asia

January 3, 2025 |  By Sue Morris

With funds from ANM, a ministry in South Asia is able to take teams of 35 to 45 young people to a group of islands. The team had prayed and prepared for the outreach, targeting seven Islands. The young people received training to be leaders and to train others to lead groups of Christians. On the Island, the team did Outreach Ministry in various villages.

Busy Days and Nights of Outreach

Every morning, the team meets at sunrise for leadership training. Later, they go house to house, sharing the Gospel and inviting the people to an evening meeting.

In the evening, the team sings gospel songs, presents a gospel drama, and someone preaches, then they show a film that covers everything from the Creation to the Final Judgement. The team talks one-on-one with people after the meeting. They visit again later to do an outreach follow-up and leadership training with those who were saved.

Follow-up to Develop Disciples

After the outreaches, the ministry establishes home churches in the towns and develops local Christians to lead the groups. They take very seriously the command of Jesus to make disciples. The goal is to train the new converts and the group has trained over 500 leaders to minister on the islands.

Without the funds from the ANM catalog to hire a boat, the Outreaches would be challenging,

if not impossible, to complete. The funds make it possible for Mr. Maity and the young people to reach unreached people in South Asia with the Gospel.

Give a boat through the ANM catalog now.

A New Convert Because of Prayer

One day, Santosh, the ministry leader, heard a knock on his door. Mr. Maity, a high-caste Brahmin, was there with a prayer request. “Could you pray for my family, especially my daughter?” Though a believer in Krishna, Mr. Maity was desperate enough to reach out to Santosh, a missionary who worked in his village.

Mr. Maity was concerned for his daughter, who could not walk or talk at eight years of age. After waiting for years for Krishna to touch his daughter, he asked the Christian missionary for help. Santosh immediately prayed with Mr. Maity for his family, especially his daughter. That first contact led to Santosh having more prayer meetings with Mr. Maity.

As Santosh continued to pray with him, Mr. Maity came to know Jesus as his Savior. Santosh poured into Mr. Maity, training him in the ways of the Lord and teaching him from the Bible. Five years later, Mr. Maity became the prominent leader of the South Asia Islands ministry.

Training Pays Off

Mr. Maity goes from island to island to minister at the local house churches, training and encouraging the local pastors. At first, he would travel by boat to an island with his bicycle. He would ride his bike from village to village. It was a slow process, but God used him to minister and bring spiritual healing to the islands.

In 2023, the ministry was able to give Mr. Maity a motorcycle. With faster transportation, he could reach more home churches on the islands. Now, he has been able to encourage and train more local pastors.
