About This Cause
Living Rock Ministries, founded by Rizalino and Rose Montes and currently led by their son Danny and his wife Cita Montes, seeks to wholeheartedly obey Jesus’ command to go and make disciples. Living Rock Ministries is endeavoring to establish a church in every village on Samar, Leyte, and many adjoining smaller islands in the Philippines.
Samar, with its Waray-Waray people, is considered the least evangelized island in the Philippines. It is also one of the most economically depressed provinces as it is frequently struck by horrible weather (over 15 typhoons a year) and is fraught with political unrest (it is called “the political laboratory of the communist guerrillas”). Many of the people are desperately poor, often leading them to alcoholism and to violence. Deliverance can only be found in Jesus Christ; however, the gospel is met with resistance throughout parts of Leyte and Samar. Pastors and missionaries are frequently harassed and assaulted and churches are destroyed. But in spite of this opposition, Living Rock Ministries has raised up more than 85 missionaries and pastors and planted nearly 90 village churches. A small Bible school continues to train missionaries.
Aside from the physical threats, another difficulty facing Living Rock Ministries missionaries is insufficient support for their families and ministries. Most of them serve in village churches where the Sunday offering is at best the equivalent of $2. However, their poor economic state does not deter them from being faithful and fruitful in the ministry.
